Collecting the data

Co-operation with the press

In 2014, the project team launched a large campaign in the press. Since we wanted chats in all four national languages, we got in touch with the press offering insight into our preceding SMS project and information about the intended WhatsApp project. The press thus willingly published articles or made radio shows about the project(s), in which the population was asked to send in their chats.

Sending in chats

The URLs posted by the press led the informants to a site on our server, which presented them with a very detailed instruction how to send us their chat(s). We used pictures for Android, iOS and Windows Mobile showing step by step how to forward chats.

The following steps had to be taken in order to make chats available to us:

Send us one chat as a backup file in an e-mail, an option that is available within WhatsApp. The informants were requested to remove media files (i.e. videos, pictures or sound files) but did not always comply. We removed media files later on.
Upon receiving the file, our server answered with an acknowledgement of the file, which included an instruction to:
- Give permission to use the texts written by the informant, i.e. agreeing to our data-protection standards.
- Forward this request for permission to all communication partners in the chat just sent in.
- Fill in a questionnaire about personal information such as age, gender, education etc.
- Send in more chats

Data protection agreement

data_protection Each participant had to agree for their texts (i.e. texts written by themselves, not texts addressed at them) to our data protection agreement. Here the German and French versions of the agreements. Agreements in other languages were formulated along the same line:

um den Teilnehmenden einen Link zu schicken, damit sie dem Projekt ihr elektronisches Einverständnis geben können
um die Teilnehmenden per E-Mail daran zu erinnern, dass das Projekt noch immer auf das elektronische Einverständnis wartet
damit die Teilnehmenden bei einem zweiten Besuch den Online-Fragebogen nicht mehr ausfüllen müssen
um den Teilnehmenden ggf. mitzuteilen, dass sie am Gewinnspiel gewonnen haben
um Teilnehmende ggf. anzufragen, ob die mit einem Projektmitglied ein Interview führen wollen

Das Projekt wird die E-Mail-Adressen der Teilnehmenden NICHT

an Drittpersonen weitergeben
mit den WhatsApp-Chats von den Teilnehmenden verlinken
mit den Antworten der Teilnehmenden aus dem Online-Fragebogen verlinken

Wie schützt das Projekt die Privatsphäre der Teilnehmenden? Das Projekt «What’s up, Switzerland?» schützt die Privatsphäre der Teilnehmenden, indem es alle WhatsApp-Chats anonymisiert. Die folgenden Informationen werden per Computer automatisch so anonymisiert, dass man die WhatsApp-Chats nicht mehr auf die Teilnehmenden zurückführen kann:

alle Vornamen und Nachnamen
alle Strassennamen
alle Postleitzahlen
alle E-Mail-Adressen
alle WWW-Adressen
alle Nummernblöcke, die 3 oder mehr Ziffern enthalten (z.B. «079 12 34567» wird zu «nnn 12 nnnnnnn»)

Minderjährige Minderjährige dürfen nur am Projekt «What’s up, Switzerland?» teilnehmen, wenn sie die Erlaubnis ihres/ihrer Erziehungsberechtigten haben.

French

Quel type d’information est enregistré? Le projet «What’s up, Switzerland?» enregistre les données suivantes des participants:

les messages WhatsApp que les participants envoient par e-mail
le consentement électronique des participants
les indications des participants dans le questionnaire en ligne
les adresses e-mail des participants
Comment les adresses e-mail seront-elles utilisées dans le projet?

Le projet «What’s up, Switzerland?» utilise les adresses e-mail des participants pour:

leur envoyer un lien pour qu’ils puissent donner leur consentement électronique
les rappeler par e-mail que le projet attent encore leur consentement électronique
éviter que les participants doivent compléter le questionnaire une deuxième fois, lors d’une deuxième visite
les informer, le cas échéant, qu’ils ont gagné au tirage au sort
les informer que des membres du projet souhaitent les interviewer

Les adresses e-mail des participants ne seront PAS:

communiquées à des tiers
reliées aux messages WhatsApp des participants
reliées aux informations du questionnaire en ligne

Comment le projet protège-t-il la sphère privée des participants? Le projet «What’s up, Switzerland?» protège la sphère privée des participants en anonymisant tous les chats WhatsApp. Les informations suivantes seront anonymisées automatiquement par ordinateur, de manière que les participants restent anonymes:

tous les noms et prénoms
tous les noms de rue
tous les codes postaux
toutes les adresses e-mail
toutes les adresses WWW
tous les numéros contenant plus de 2 chiffres (ex. «079 12 34567» devient «nnn 12 nnnnnnn»)

Mineurs Les mineurs ne peuvent participer au projet «What’s up, Switzerland?» qu’avec le consentement de leur tuteur/tutrice légal(e).

Storing the data

The files received were in a first step stored as text files, while all the information about the person's e-mail address, about permissions as well as the answers to the questionnaire were stored in a database.

After the end of the collection phase, the pre-processing started, which put an emphasis on data protection and data integrity, but also aimed at making the data available to the project members as quickly as possible.
